Neutron Star

What is a neutron star? What does it look like? What are the mind-blowing activities that happen near it and in it? How is it formed?

In my last blog, I wrote about Supernova, the end product of which is a 'neutron star', and that's what I'm going to talk about now.
So.. Which is the densest thing?
answer: Osmium, density: more than 100 grams in a teaspoonful.
But that's only on earth.
The universe is of another level..
The densest thing in the universe is the neutron star.
                      That's what it looks like.

What do we know about the regular matter on earth? - It is made up of atoms with electrons revolving around neutrons and protons.
But it's completely different with a neutron star.

The lines you see near the neutron star in the figure above are the strong magnetic field lines, enough to pull out the iron in the haemoglobin inside your blood.
As I have discussed in my previous blog, namely,"the supernovae", there is an intense pressure developed at the center of a star, and it blasts. It's highly dense core is left after the explosion, and this is the neutron star.
There is something(or rather, a LOT) different about neutron star.
They don't have electrons, just their neutrons, giving them their name. This greatly reduces the volume as the electrons are at a huge distance from the nucleus in a regular atom.
This is what makes it so dense.
If I take one teaspoon of it, and gently place it on the surface of the earth, It will dig all it's way to the other side of the earth, easily creating a hole. Compare this with a teaspoon of osmium...Big Difference right?
The neutron star has a density of 10^17 kg/m3, because of which time there run very slow..slower than you can think of.
We still do not know much about these, as the nearest one is predicted to be more than 1000 light years far from us.
The normal size of a neutron star is smaller than New Delhi, but it's mass is 8 times that of our sun.  Neutron stars spin really, really fast, their one rotation is completed in 1.5 milliseconds or at the most a few seconds, again owing to their gravity. Fastest moving neutron stars even emit radiations.
